Turning an L300 into an overland vehicle

My beloved L300 came into my life last year and was immediately slept in. That following morning I decided to build it into a proper camp machine. A friend of mine, Eric, who owns a fabrication company, has decided to come on board and head the project. It may help that he now owns the Green Crystal Lite Exceed that I bought a few months ago. Who knows... This thread will serve as the collective progress location and I will parse it into seperate threads when it gets too busy.

Here are the current projects that we are attacking: Please note that we are developing all of these modifications for resale and will make a few spares of everything....

  • Full Stainless 2.5" Exhaust, (all parts in, just need to weld it up)
  • Batwing awning and rooftop tent
  • 36" Multi Drawer setup with fridge/freezer on slide out also
  • Full swing out and locking tire carrier complete with fold out table, sink, prep station
  • 40 Gallon water Tank with shurflo pump and auto shut off (made to contour behind middle row of seats.
  • water heater
  • Auxiliary fuel tank where spare tire was. Custom made to increase departure angle and not be a pain in the ass
  • Solid state electrical relay panel
  • SOLAR panel and charge controller
  • Dual AGM batteries (already done)
  • Heavy Duty Rear Springs

Today is exhaust day. We are fabricating a 3" stainless side exit exhaust. I will be posting pictures as we move along. So excited! We will be selling complete bolt on exhausts after we finish the trial period. Quality is the most important part of this project and I am proud to have Eric from Fabworx doing the fabrication.

That thing sounds fantastic!

Question: the piece in front of the exit, is that a resonator or is it just 3 inch back from the flange adapter?

Reminds me of when I did something similar to my Mk2 Jetta..

Haha the jetta exhaust sounds Awesome!

It's a small 3" resonator that Eric insisted we weld in to cut down on the drone .

I finally installed the Dobinson HD Torsion Bars and Pro Comp front shock absorbers on Friday. I gotta get used to the bouncyness....

I'm curious as to how you find the Dobinson's, i've been thinking about changing out my torsion bars and leaf springs for their stuff. I'd be interested in an exhaust. I was planning on going to check out the only guy in my area that does mandrel bending. It seems to be an expensive route even for a short side exit. How much do you think you're exhaust will run? Any plans for making 2.5" down pipes? Looks good, and sounds MEAN!

Do you have any photos showing that are pulled back to show the entire side of the van that the exhaust dumps out of? I'd like to change up my set up, don't like where it dumps or how it looks...or sounds. Yours sounds great!

Gosh Kellyn,
Looks great. Ok I am selling my house and before I move I want all that too. So maybe after the sale, my dawg Snickers & I may be setting up camp. I pray for your assistance and guidance, 'm please!

I'm interested in just a 2.5 inch downpipe any idea on a time or cost?

The issue is the design of the Delica exhaust. The downpipe has a tough flange to find on the turbine side, making it difficult to create a true 2.5 inch exhaust. Most will start the increased diameter exhaust at the downpipe outlet flange which is the first jspec joint closest to the engine.
