Help with VIN of L300

Hi guys,

I have just bought an L300 that is listed by the seller as 1989. However, the V5 document says 'declared manufactured in 2000' and first registered in 2001.

The seller advised that the van was imported, I'm struggling to find the truth with the VIN online. The v5 says it has a 4D56 engine which I believe is correct

I've asked for a picture of the chassis plate and engine code to confirm. I will be picking the van up on Saturday.

I have attached an image of the van to help, I think it must be an 1989 as by the year 2000 the mk4 was in production.

The VIN is:

JMAJNP15VYA000462

Any help from you guys would be appreciated on your thoughts based on the VIN and image, thanks guys and look forward to joining in as a new member :)

EDIT: This is a UK registered vehicle if it makes any difference

That looks like the last of the second generation; so '85/'86. That is a Japanese domestic VIN and the 10th digit is the year code; but Y is not listed in the manual I have available (covers '87-'95). I did find one source that suggest Y might be 1986...

Based on the Japanese VIN that confirms that it was JDM and definitely an import then? Based on your info above it sounds like the van might be older than the 1989 described?

Thanks for the info and confirmation, the seller should be giving me an image of the VIN plate and engine code later so i can confirm 100% just incase the v5 document is incorrect

Legend! :)

There should also be a model code, on the plate.
I misstated, that is a european export vin...

Thanks dude! that document is mega useful. So then, my VIN having a 'Y' for model year is an enigma then? Given it isn't stated there.

According to my research, 'Y' would be for the year 2000, which doesn't make sense given the body model of the van, but who knows

I'll wait to secure images of the VIN plate from seller and hopefully the VIN is different that what the v5 states

Does this help prove anything?
I expect based on that model number, that the van was actually manufactured in 1988?

2000 for year code Y isn't for an L300 IDT... and they probably rotated year codes over time/versions. Unfortunately, the model # doesn't indicate year of manufacture.

Ah thanks dude, do you know where the VIN is on these vans? The seller seems to be struggling to find the VIN plate I asked them to send me a picture of

The chassis number (P15VJLNR6 in your case) is the only VIN on these vans. Strangely, yours does not show up on the epic-data look-up.
@sk66 , any thoughts?
EPC only recognizes JDM chassis numbers; this is a european market RHD van. In this case the P15V is the model designation, not the chassis number... if you look at the data plate on your van the top line will be similar.

This is my van.

The JMA identifier is the VIN/chassis number for this van.

Thanks @Terence Yuen , how is it possible for this van to be year 2000 though? I thought they stopped making this model/shape around 1994?

If that is the third version it will have a drop at the front of the door windows. That's not apparent in the image you posted, but it may just be hidden.

The third model was made from '1986-2013. It went through several facelifts and minor changes over the years; and I thought the single square headlights were only on the very early ones (~86-88). Note that Terence's L300 is a '2000, I would expect this one to look more like his if it were a later make... but there was a whole lot of variability depending on which factory made it and which country it was intended for.

If it is a 2000 it still has a couple years before it can be brought into the US and registered.

Where did you find the decoder? That's the only example I've seen that seems entirely accurate in this case...

@sk66 I am UK based so US import stuff won't be relevant for me. But yes I see what you mean. I think it should be an '88 or' 89 van but going to be hard to prove unless this thing has a VIN. I will be picking it up in person this weekend so hopefully I can find out for certain then

It has a european VIN... it is the JMA series. The decoder Terence used got all of the other details correct based on the VIN and model number you provided; so I would have to guess it also got the date of manufacture correct. It also agrees with the original import documents... given all of that, I am far more inclined to believe the seller is wrong (and I was as well).

So you reckon it's year 2000 then @sk66 ?

I've attached a side-on image here, I think it has the door dip on the windows you are on about. So that would confirm it is a later model?

These small model details are exactly the help I was hoping for thanks for the efforts all

The door dip would mean it's a third gen; '86-2013. Yeah, I think it is probably a 2000 given everything else.
